INCLUSIVITY: WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Inclusivity of supermarket is a concept that has its roots in the 90s of the 20th century

Being inclusive means taking diversity into every action, providing the availability of knowledge, information, services and products regardless of the limitations of the audience, guaranteeing the participation of all members of a community, actively preventing exclusion and discrimination.

INCLUSIVE SUPERMARKETS

Retail chains were pretty quick to recognise the benefits of adapting their shops to the needs of a wider range of customers. Today, in almost all supermarkets, mobility-disabled consumers can use:: ramp, lift, wide entrance doors, regulated shelves, dedicated staff assistance, accessible visual labelling, or adapted toilets.

In many countries or regions, retail chains and other public buildings are obliged to respect architectural and communication accessibility.

An absolute precursor to inclusivity was the British chain Tesco, which began implementing the ‘Tesco Accessible’ programme in the 1990s. The aim was to create a welcoming environment for all customers.  No doubt, the investment of relatively small resources in the long term significantly expanded the chain’s customer base, and Tesco’s programme became a benchmark for competitors.  Its success story has been followed by America’s Walmart or the UK’s Sainsbury’s.

At the moment, the idea of inclusivity is taken very seriously and professionals stand behind all improvements. Based on research and testing, they are introducing unique solutions for different customer groups: those with mobility disabilities, the blind or the deaf.

FROM THE APP, THROUGH THE GUIDES, TO THE TWINST FOR ALL SHOPPING TROLLEY

A pilot Carrefour supermarket offering inclusive shopping for a diverse customer base opened in Paris in 2023/24.

Additional innovations have been introduced to facilitate the shopping process for a spectrum of customers with disabilities:

  • Oorion and Handivisible apps to facilitate the movement of customers with disabilities;
  • Above-ground guides to enable movement for customers who are blind or visually impaired;
  • Special trolleys for people with reduced mobility;
  • Contrasting labelling and pictograms at each platform entrance;
  • Doorbells in the organic department
  • Navilens technology, which offers voice reading of product composition;
  • A non-food offer adapted to the needs of customers with disabilities.

These improvements have significantly improved the shopping experience for large numbers of customers. As can be seen, it is not always a matter of introducing complex technology; a small technical change such as contrasting labelling or an adapted shopping trolley greatly expands accessibility.

To illustrate, it is useful to follow the example of a shopping trolley that was customised for the Carrefour project. It is a product of the Rabtrolley brand: ‘Twinast for all‘.

TWINST for All is an innovative cart without a basket. Its aim is to encourage customers to shop with their own reusable bags  instead of single-use bags,  offering an easier, more convenient and environmentally friendly way to do shopping.

A person using their own wheelchair can attach to the cart equipment themselves. Because the frame is extremely low and manoeuvrable, the whole shopping process is easy and pleasant. Shopping bags hung on the top frame in combination with scanning systems speed up the shopping experience and make the customer less dependent on supervisors and shop assistants. The design is lightweight and therefore does not cause damage to shop equipment.

INCLUSIVITY AS PART OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Inclusive shopping is a fashion, a requirement and an important trend. This means the further development of inclusive solutions.

Taking steps to promote inclusivity helps to build societies that are more capable of achieving sustainable development, where equality, social justice and environmental protection are equally important.

With Twinst for All trolley, you can easily implement the idea of inclusivity and sustainability in your shop.
